Flowers

by The Last Attraction

/

about

"Flowers" became one of the most requested songs at shows and radio performances until it fell out of the group's live repertoire. Written and recorded in Paris during the transitional phase into chanson noir from the psychedelic folk-jazz oriented music of the original line-up of TLA.

lyrics

Flowers

Her coat hangs in the closet
Her shoes lie in the hall
Her sorrows can be read
In a book no one will read
Every night, her favorite café is full
Conversations continue
A noisy street drowns out
Her fragile garden
And the flowers come every day
White chrysanthemums and black roses.
Cruel to send her flowers when she never blossomed
Her cat wants to be fed
Doesn’t stop hunting for mice
The letterbox is getting full
There will be no replies
The rent is unpaid
Nobody comes to collect
Her worries never cease
As the debts pile up
And the flowers come every day.
White chrysanthemums and black roses,
Cruel to send her flowers
When she never blossomed
Her coat wants to hold her arms
Her shoes want to touch her feet
Her cat looks for her lap
And her diary waits for news
There’s a young man in the café
Who wonders where she is
There’s a father who is weeping
And a mother she never knew
And the flowers come every day
White chrysanthemums and black roses
Cruel to send her flowers
When she never blossomed
